Local board Member, Entrepreneur, and Artist speaks to Bleckley County High FBLA

Bleckley County High School Business Classes and the BCHS FBLA organization were honored to have Mr. Derek Belflower join them as a guest speaker on Friday, October 21, 2016. Mr. Derek Belflower is one of our local Board of Education members, a local entrepreneur, and an illustrator at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins.

Mr. Belflower spoke about his educational history, the various career pathways he has experienced over the past 20 plus years and the transitions and skills needed for each of those career pathways. Mr. Belflower is a Cochran native and once he transitioned into a field that tampered his creative juices, he was encouraged by his wife, Ella Ruth Belflower, to take a pottery class at the local college. It is in this pottery class that he developed his love for pottery as well as honing his pottery talents that have molded into what is now Possum Pottery. Mr. Belflower travels the state as he attends festivals to share his artwork with others. His focus style for artwork is face jugs. He chose this particular focus as it spoke to his desire to bring homage to the historical art and his desire to continue the art style.

Mr. Belflower was able to share with students the thoughts that go into looking at supply and demand, target audience, advertising, marketing, and the like when starting and developing your own business. The students ranging in grades nine through twelve were very interested in the information shared by Mr. Belflower and noted his intriguing mind that allowed him to create such interesting pieces. Mr. Belflower is a very talented local artist.
