Shaw FBLA Observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Author:  S. Smallwood, Shaw High Webmaster

(Columbus, GA) Shaw’s Future Business Leaders of America organization observed Breast Cancer Awareness Month with planned activities throughout October.   Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women; males, although rare, can also get breast cancer.  It was FBLA’s goal to create awareness of this form of cancer by providing each student a flyer containing breast cancer facts and ways to reduce the risk of cancer.  Students also received a bookmark displaying the pink ribbon symbol and slogan of Faith, Hope, and Courage.

Each week facts were given over the PA in the afternoon.  In addition, a question of the day was asked at lunch on Friday’s and students/faculty/staff were encouraged to guess the answer.  The winner of each day’s question was announced at the end of the day and he/she received a supersized Hershey’s candy bar.  Breast cancer awareness items were sold each Friday during lunch in the commons area with over $300 donated.  Bulletin boards were prepared in classrooms, flyers were placed around the school, and on October 20 and 27, there was a successful PINK OUT going on! On October 27, cupcakes were sold to the student body for $1.00 if wearing pink and $2.00 if not wearing pink.  Overall, the project was a total success.  FBLA Advisers are Melanie Boatner, Danielle Maddox, Michelle Nichols, and Kim White.
