Getting on Stage

Maybe your adviser signed you up for an event that he/she thought you would excel in. Maybe your best friend signed you up to compete in Public Speaking and you just found out. Maybe you signed up to compete in Future Business Leader in the hopes of becoming the first place winner in the nation. Whatever the scenario is, here is how to get on stage and win.

  1. Sign up

Be bold. Be epic. Be courageous.  The first step to winning is to sign up.

  1. Study, Study, STUDY!!!!

The first key to success is to study. The biggest mistake members make is not studying for their event. There are online study guides for testing events. If you are competing in a performance event, read through your speaking parts or speech at the very least three to four times a day.

  1. Be prepared

If you are taking a test, be on time. If testing is in the morning, eat a great breakfast. Treat this test as serious as your final exams or the ACT. If you are in a performance event, have your speaking parts either memorized, or on appropriate index cards. Also, drink water and avoid sugary drinks to keep your voice sounding clear and firm. Be confident and own your speech.

If you follow these simple tips, you are sure to get on stage!
